I'm very disappointed in that article. For something where they're talking about how influential and important Bill Perlmutter's photos were, to be only showing one of them is inexcusable. At least link to a gallery or something.
That said, there's a really interesting thing on the right side of the photograph. Notice the narrow gauge rail running along the right side of the canal. Laid directly on dirt, with board over the ties so people can walk across it.
