I'm very disappointed in that article. For something where they're talking about how influential and important Bill Perlmutter's photos were, to be only showing one of them is inexcusable. At least link to a gallery or something.

That said, there's a really interesting thing on the right side of the photograph. Notice the narrow gauge rail running along the right side of the canal. Laid directly on dirt, with board over the ties so people can walk across it.

The article reads very generically. Corporate 'uplifting ' style, but nothing to grab the reader really.

Unless I am mistaken, that could very well be old WWI style Trench Railway materials. Of course it may just be mining railway, not that there is much difference between the two.

There are two railways - the men and trucks at the left of the image are also running on one, visible at the top of the image.
