Musk posted that the preliminary cause is a leak in area just above the engine firewall. It built up pressure higher that the could be contained or vented.

Re: SpaceX 2024
SpaceX may face some issues stemming from this. I saw it pointed out that the debris came down outside of the hazard zone, and a number of commercial flights had to go into holds or divert due to it.

That is a most impressive RUD with lots of pretty sparkles and trails. I am VERY interested in finding out exactly what went wrong. Did they intentionally pull heat tiles off this one?Micael wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 11:20 pm Video of Starship breaking up over Turks and Caicos islands:

Re: SpaceX 2024
They did intentionally remove some tiles but that had nothing to do with this; the failure occurred late in the launch.Belushi TD wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 1:55 pmThat is a most impressive RUD with lots of pretty sparkles and trails. There's a tweet from Elon about a propellant leak in the engine compartment; they made some significant changes to the fuel distribution system and plumbing on this one so perhaps not all the bugs were worked out

This one is going to be a problem I think. When you're having planes divert and even land this makes a lot of people sit up and take notice. Not to mention other countries you're fly over/near. I wonder if Starship ops will have to be moved to Florida.

SpaceX will figure out the root cause of the issue, make the necessary modifications to Starship and submit the mishap report to the FAA. Starship will be launching again out of Boca Chica with 3-months.
Re: SpaceX 2024
I suspect that is an integral part of SpaceX culture. This was not a cheap failure but is only expensive if you don't learn from it.SpaceX will figure out the root cause of the issue, make the necessary modifications to Starship and submit the mishap report to the FAA. I don't know about the three months, but is possible.
The FAA might have to issue NOTAMs during launches. Launches from Boca Chica might become more complicated if the timing includes a launch window for clearing the aircraft from the flight path, but it could be done.

Re: SpaceX 2024
From my understanding SpaceX has already determined the likely root cause was a failure in one of the Raptor Vacuum engines and it isn't a commonality issue with other Raptor Vacuum engines. Next flight timing will be based on FAA review of the mishap report. We will see another Starship flight within 3-months.PLB wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 2:35 amI suspect that is an integral part of SpaceX culture. Re: SpaceX 2024
One thing I see as a potential problem is that, listening to the ATC recordings, the contingency areas activated by the FAA seemed to effectively stop all air traffic between the US and the Caribbean while they were in effect. If they’re going to block out the same areas ahead of time for every Starship launch, that could have quite a disruptive effect. Especially when the launch rate of Starship goes up. Stopping air traffic there on a daily, or even multiple times a day, basis? I think they may have to figure something out here.PLB wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 2:35 amI suspect that is an integral part of SpaceX culture. Once they settle the design some they'll start building reliability. When they get less concerned about debris the safety zones will change.Micael wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 3:08 pmOne thing I see as a potential problem is that, listening to the ATC recordings, the contingency areas activated by the FAA seemed to effectively stop all air traffic between the US and the Caribbean while they were in effect. Re: SpaceX 2024
Scott Manley just did a video on this. There is the published Flight Restrictions for launch. However that area stops before Starship passes Florida. Those other areas are designated as DRA (Debris Response Areas) and those are only activated in the event of a Mishap and the airspace is closed down. For a normal Starship launch from Boca Chica that doesn't result in a RUD, the traffic wouldn't be restricted in the DRA areas.Micael wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 3:08 pmOne thing I see as a potential problem is that, listening to the ATC recordings, the contingency areas activated by the FAA seemed to effectively stop all air traffic between the US and the Caribbean while they were in effect. Some rumint from Space Sudoer:
From what I'm hearing, some engineers and QA technicians intentionally skipped checks on Ship 33 to meet the schedule.
Many were fired this week.

Interesting.
NEWS: @SpaceX's Starlink is quietly preparing to incorporate quantum communication technologies into its systems.
Quantum communication promises unhackable and superfast internet connections!
- The technology utilizes quantum mechanics principles like quantum entanglement.
- Integration could redefine global connectivity and enhance @Starlink’s leadership in communications.
- Potential impact includes advancements in national security and data encryption standards.
- SpaceX has not yet made official announcements, though trials may commence soon.
Industry insiders speculate that this pivot toward quantum internet could further establish Starlink as a leader in next-generation communications, influencing everything from national security frameworks to everyday data encryption standards.
If achieved, the potential ripple effects of a Starlink-enhanced quantum network could redefine how we perceive and interact with digital connectivity across the world.
