Does her official biography give any insight?

Assuming that that aren't multiple Grisel Marreros in the USN with a LinkledIn profile, she got her Bachelor and MBA from Trident University International.jemhouston wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 1:39 amIf she got the MBA at Harvard Business School, that confirms HBS = 2/3 BS.Drunknsubmrnr wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 12:56 am I’m very disappointed in that crew if they didn’t have that network pw cracked within a few days. A submarine crew would have done that out of boredom if nothing else.
Is it the opinion of the board that the MBA turned that chief evil, or was she evil before she got the MBA? I have to say that if she wasn’t even bright enough to hide the WiFi network an MBA in infosec wasn’t worth much.

How the hell did this happen? Do the ships not take a pause after major port visits, turn off almost everything that should be radiating, and run a sweep to see if there's anything unexpected? Isn't there a log of everything that should be radiating? Up-traffic on the Starlink should be detectable, at least. And the CO and XO should have or easily be able to generate a list of every authorized wi-fi network.
The entire Goat Locker should get the Big Chicken Dinner. Some for taking part in it, some for knowing about it and not doing anything.

Re: US Navy News
Is this for real? I had COMSEC and EMCON drilled into me from basic training onwards as a very junior enlisted radio operator. What's particularly interesting about this case is the criminal energy the chiefs displayed, and the absolute ineptitude of the CO and XO(s) in unovering the illicit WiFi.
Everybody who isn't completely computer illiterate could do that. In a pinch, turn up somebody who studied computer science. It isn't rocket surgery, after all
What kind of muppets rise to command these days? And what kind of attitude shapes that awful kind of senior NCOs?

I wasn't a radio operator, I just stayed awake during the threat briefings where they told us that if you didn't get the f*** outta Dodge after transmitting for over 15 seconds, you were going to die in an artillery barrage.Jotun wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 1:43 pm Is this for real? It's interesting that all of the junior enlisted knew the score long before the wardroom did. If I'd been one of the junior guys, I would have started hunting for the antenna and taken it down to the Skipper's cabin...

Sadly, yes. We have had similar com breaches before. We have also had a lot of piss-poor leadership, and a Navy personnel system that is not very good at screening out people who should not be in the Big Chair before they put their butt in it.Jotun wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 1:43 pm Is this for real? A huge part is complacency. We’ve been so used to fighting a 7th century enemy that we have allowed ourselves to get lax and lose a lot of key military understanding because it wasn’t daily refreshed in blood.

DDG CO relieved for scope mounted backwards
DDG CO fired for the viral photo of him shooting a rifle with the scope mounted backwards.
He was on an at sea visit to the amphibious ship and handed the rifle for a “firepower demo”.
Not his skill set. Certainly a bit of an “oops”, but to be relieved of command six months later while deployed in a combat zone?
Throwing the BS flag. There has to be something else behind this.
A couple of truisms;
You promote in your Officer Corps, and in the Goat Locker, what you promote them for.
If you fire good people for minor things, the good people will leave.

Ok.... I've never served in the military. My understanding of security and so forth comes from both reading I've done and from the people I've met on this board.
Even I'm saying "WHAT THE EVERLOVING JESUS TITTYF%$#INGCHRIST is going on here?"
None of the people involved were thinking about anything other than downloading porn. Howinthehell did they think they were going to be able to avoid being caught?
Even back in my stupid alcohol soaked fraternity days, "DON'T GET CAUGHT" was a HUGE part of operational planning for ANYTHING we were contemplating doing.

The viral photo resulted in a command climate investigation, and THAT is what got him relieved.Nightwatch2 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 2:51 pm DDG CO fired for the viral photo of him shooting a rifle with the scope mounted backwards.

Which goes along with my first comment,
There is something else to this story.

Being set up to look like an idiot by your own crew does not exactly compliment your leadership skills.
Re: US Navy News
Given that there were several attempts to pass notes to the CO/XO to inform them of this via a postbox which were intercepted by the chiefs, I'd bet that there was a certain amount of intimidation going on towards anybody who looked like speaking up.

Re: US Navy News
With the Starlink setup why wouldn't they take the fairly elementary measure and turn off SSID broadcast. Then it wouldn't have been visible to other peoples devices on the ship unless they used a scanner (app or physical) to find it.

And that raises all kinds of questions in itself.
