Today, I learned that barnacles are not shell-fish, but marine crustacea.
Distant kin to krill, shrimp, prawns etc etc.
Juveniles do free-swimming etc crustacean sorta things, then settle down and grow a 'shell'.
Consider me gob-smacked...

I suspect even those who spent their entire lives studying barnacles were gob-smacked to find out that Sacculina is a barnacle as well.
