Freedom Rock 20025

Post by jemhouston »

I was in Iowa recently to see family and the State Fair. One stop was seeing Freedom Rock, aka The Rock. It's off the Greenfield exit on I-80.

I've seen a few of the rocks in the 99 counties in Iowa.

The Freedom Rock (established in 1999) is a large (approx. 60+ ton) boulder located in rural Iowa that is repainted every year with a different Thank You for our nations Veterans to honor their service to our country. The artist, Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II, was inspired by the movie Saving Private Ryan, as well as, wanting to give Veterans a unique recognition on Memorial Day.
Sorensen paints The Freedom Rock on his own with the tremendous support of family and friends. Sorensen is not commissioned to paint the rock but is able to do so each year with the generous help of donations and merchandise sales.

Wow, thanks for sharing, that is really cool. He is a very talented painter. In particular, I really like how his painting's feel 3-dimensional. In several of them they have a single person in the foreground who looks like a cardboard cutout sitting on top of the painting.

Over the years, various vets' have had their ashes mixed with the paint.

The main rock or aka The Rock, is painted new every year.

Fun fact, it's only been vandalized once. The cops knew, but couldn't prove who did it. A local motorcycle gang told them (reportedly), "You had your fun. If it happens again, we'll have ours. It doesn't matter if you did it or not. You'll be our first stop."
