Allies and Type XXi u-boats

Post by Rocket J Squrriel »

How much did the Allies know about the boats before getting hold of them after the war and are there any sources on it?

We had the design specs for them, had evaluated them and put a counter in place before the first Type XXI was launched.

And sky-lights in their pens' armoured roofs ??

Yes, yes, I'm thinking of that climactic scene in 'Das Boot', where weary crew returns to pen after air-raid to discover it now has generous 'natural lighting'...

Our spies > their spies.

Also, our intelligence gathering.

More details here, including HMS Seraph’s conversion for counter trials by late 1944.

Very interesting article. Sonobuoys in WW2? Wow. (I used to work for GEC Marconi who made Sonobuoys on the same site - in fact most of our team had Sonobuoy experience https://www.dst.defence.gov.au/news/202 ... -subs-hide).
