There's been a bit of an oopsie on the M5 near Bristol today.

Reminds me of a similar incident a couple years ago:

Lucky he didn't take down the gantry when he whacked it.
Re: Tipping point reached on the M5
Are there traffic cameras near that gantry? Because tilting up the tipper is a way of hiding the truck's license plate. Some 10 years ago, a guy took down an elevated walkway doing that in Rio(truck circulation was forbidden on that road at that hour). 1 dead, 3 wounded. That driver deserved to hang - he went in knowingly(thus the tilted-up tipper) and someone died because of him.

Seen this happen before. Tilting the bed should sound an annunciator and flash a warning lamp in the cab… unless the tilt microswitch has gone U/S and the driver just wired it open or closed as necessary to stay quiet. Not that that ever happens of course.David Newton wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 12:54 pm https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-64822217

Re: Tipping point reached on the M5
Simple fix for people messing with the wiring of the microswitch for the bed tilt warning: if the microswitch goes out of service then the bed will return to horizontal but then gets locked in place. Logic for that? It's a safety-critical feature which should fail safe (hence the bed returning to the horizontal) and fiddling with it should be detected and punished very harshly.

Oh agree completely old boy, but these are wagon operators we’re dealing with here; not necessarily the most scrupulous.David Newton wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 1:29 pm Simple fix for people messing with the wiring of the microswitch for the bed tilt warning: if the microswitch goes out of service then the bed will return to horizontal but then gets locked in place. That’s a lot more than a little tilt.Craiglxviii wrote: ↑Sat Mar 04, 2023 6:02 pmOh agree completely old boy, but these are wagon operators we’re dealing with here; not necessarily the most scrupulous.David Newton wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 1:29 pm Simple fix for people messing with the wiring of the microswitch for the bed tilt warning: if the microswitch goes out of service then the bed will return to horizontal but then gets locked in place. Re: Tipping point reached on the M5
That may be a case of the top of the bed remaining stationary and the truck proceeding for a little bit!
The last similar incident here was in entering a tunnel. Needless to say, the overheard services were trashed...

Re: Tipping point reached on the M5
Too common to be really notable. There are legions of YouTube videos with dump beds hitting obstructions. Note that pretty much all of the beds are empty.
Considering that this category of truck also gives the rest of the truckers a bad name for safety violations, requiring an alarm or switch for a tilted bed is mostly a feel good measure. Many of them also need to drive when unloading, so a simple switch and alarm would be more annoying than useful.
As an example, about every other time I drive more than 20 minutes at night in the city, I see at least one car without their lights on. A simple fix, but people don't actually set them to 'auto'.

What about an alarm that looks at bed angle plus speed? Exceed a reasonable unloading speed with the bed up, the alarm goes off.kdahm wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 2:47 am Too common to be really notable.
