This is apparently from an exercise in Sweden when an airbase was ”bombed” and they transferred the fighters by road across town to another field. Never see fun stuff like this anymore. :P

Yeah I wouldn’t rule it out. There’s road base operations being undertaken again, haven’t seen any transfers like this through towns yet though.

We still have the eighteen (nominal) Autobahn runways in western Germany. Somehow I think the support infrastructure might soon get an overhaul.

Are yours separate from any larger runways? As in are part of a group of runways including non-road ones or completely standalone?

The concept we had going, and which is in part returning, was for one dedicated longer runway and up to four road runways connected to it and eachother so planes could taxi between them. The runway group and other infrastructure made up a war base.

Below is one such base. One main runway in the middle, three road runways to the lower left of it (where pieces of road widen), and a fourth is on road 97 in the upper right hand corner.

In West Germany, the emergency runways were built as part of the Autobahn net, each najor military air station had one a few kilometers nearby.

And it was 25. The DDR had 13.
