Walter Koenig, the Russian Crewman Chekov on 'Star Trek,' Dies at 90
I'll always remember him asking to see the US nuclear wessels during the cold war in Star Trek 4.

Re: Walter Koenig, the Russian Crewman Chekov on 'Star Trek,' Dies at 90
He made a good villain because he wasn't played as a villain, he was a man who believed in what he was doing, that it was right. He was smug and superior, but he thought he was on the right side of the story.
Thats what made him so good as a villain, the fact he didn't see himself as villainous. And Koenig played that perfectly.

Hopefully you've read some SF by the other Alfred Bester.
Re: Walter Koenig, the Russian Crewman Chekov on 'Star Trek,' Dies at 90
For me, he's more remembered by that. I've watched Star Trek since I was a kid, but never was fanatic about it, and it didn't make as much of an impression to me as Babylon 5 did.Paul Nuttall wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2026 6:27 pm And then there is his portrayal of Bester in Babylon 5......

He was excellent on ST, but absolutely f-terrifying on B5.
Played latter straight as a laser, over-qualified for my Convention's Sanku 'Prayer for Fanatics':
"May the next die harmlessly, also."

If you cannot see the wood for the trees, deploy LIDAR.

Be interesting to have had him and Elim Garak have a conversation over a cup of tea.........Nik_SpeakerToCats wrote: ↑Tue Oct 27, 2026 11:33 am He was excellent on ST, but absolutely f-terrifying on B5.

Hopefully there’s an AI of that in work somewhere…

Both Bester and Garak understood the value of being polite and (Sometimes faux) respectful, They were smart enough to be charming and polite when it helped their cause...

Over at https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/ ... t-26930807, the post is Bester and Garak having tea.
I'm not sure what the rules are for posting AI generated by someone else at another forum so, I'm post the link. Mods, if this is wrong way, deleted it and let me know.

Scrolled my way through a few 'best bits' of Koenig on B5 and feeling the gentlest twitches to do a rewatch.Paul Nuttall wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2026 6:27 pm And then there is his portrayal of Bester in Babylon 5......
Not sure what Mrs Fox will say about that, from whom certain elements of my life (B5 included) are a lightly guarded secret...

He played Chekov straight too. That’s why the jokes written to make Chekov into comic relief work.Nik_SpeakerToCats wrote: ↑Tue Oct 27, 2026 11:33 am He was excellent on ST, but absolutely f-terrifying on B5.

Probably the best example is in Star Trek IV, where he and Uhura are trying to get to Alameda to find ENTERPRISE (although they don’t know it’s her yet).

So was this fellow better known for the Star Trek or the Babylonian thing?
I should try and get around to watching ST at some point.

Depends on your age I suppose, Babylon 5 was great but it was always more of a niche, almost cult classic. Star Trek is iconic, even to those who have never watched it.
