Clearly it’s old because it’s been a long time since Mexican citizens could own military calibers like the .45, which explains the popularity down south of the .38 Super.

Not really if you accept the premise that gun control is keeping the people in power in power. Latin American countries, France (?), Italy (?) are afraid of veterans who took their weapons home after their service revolting, so they ban ownership military caliber weapons
