One of several designs to satisfy the need for more air-capable escorts: a Flight Deck Spruance, proposed by Bath Iron Works in Maine. The need for more AEGIS cruisers was felt to be a higher priority.

The idea was to have 4-6 ASW helos (SH-2 and later, SH-60).
