Depends on the judge... Some... Yeah they DON'T like it. Hell I was once thrown out of court and barred for life from ever appearing in court in front of a judge... So they can have a temper! Although in my defence on that one the Sheriff in question had just been told he had to quit as the newspapers were running a story about him sleeping with prostitutes and I was the first lawyer in front of him that afternoon!

Had a visiting lawyer from Glasgow representing his client in our court today who was very interested my black kilt/argyle jacket combination with the court robe. It seems his brother-in-law is also a lawyer in the west of scotland and wears kilts to work every day. He himself usually wears a kilt at weekends but hadn't worn one to work so far, because there are very few lawyers wear kilts to work. I told him the only way they would become more commonplace is for those like himself who already own kilts to start wearing them on a daily basis. Hopefully another convert to daily kilting.

Down-side of this heat-wave is my sleep cycle is deranged. Between essential siestas and 'had enough' cat-naps, struggling to concentrate. Very glad I have generous 'Fresno' chapter buffer and neat 'arc' planned.

Upside, I remembered where I'd cached the tray of pots of 'Instant Lemon Tea' powder. Got them last year just in time for miserable autumn to switch tastes back to tea or hot chocolate. But, ample tangy lemon tea certainly offsets the rehydration requirements of ghastly heat...

Curiously, although other regions of UK have had spectacular thunder-storms, up to gulley-washer flash-floods, none have struck near here...

You don’t actually need to carry the sgian dubh. I do, because mine has a corkscrew and bottle opener, but it’s not an absolute requirement.

And the UK's reached over 32 Celsius for the sixth day in a row and ninth in total for the year.

First time that's ever happened since 1976 when there were 15 days over 32 Celsius in a row and only the second time ever more than 5 days in a row over 32 Celsius have been recorded.

So whilst absolute temperature records were well out of reach today that's still really notable.

Turns out I was slightly wrong here. At that point it was the tenth total for the year. There were four days in May where it got over 32 Celsius.

Yesterday was the eleventh for the year with temperatures reaching 34.0 Celsius and today will be the twelfth for the year, with temperatures likely a little lower than yesterday but still over 32 Celsius. Also looks likely that temperatures will exceed 32 Celsius up to and including Saturday this week and possibly Sunday next week. That would be another six, or possibly even seven, day streak over 32 Celsius for the UK and would mean that this year would comfortably beat 1976 for overall number of days over 32 Celsius, although still not coming anywhere near the 15 day continuous streak 1976 had.

That's a Met Office video comparing 1976 and 2026 at the end of this year's second heatwave in June. It's that video that made me realise I'd been mistaken about the number of days over 32 Celsius this year at that point.

Today has been considerably hotter. I've seen utterly nutty figures from a weather station near Kettering of over 39 Celsius! Given the surrounding weather station values I'm skeptical of that figure. Nevertheless I think over 36 Celsius is certainly possible.

That would be the third such day this year. That equals the number of such days in the whole 20th century!!!! Today has been the 14th day over 32 Celsius this year. Tomorrow will be the 15th and 5th in a row. Saturday is also looking like an over 32 Celsius day.

So that would be the second six day such streak this year, when as an article from 2018 put it only the 15 consecutive day run in 1976 had ever exceeded 5 such days in a row. Now here we are with two 6 day streaks inside a month! Sunday may also beat 32 Celsius in parts of south west England.

If it does then that would be a 7 day streak and 17 days in total for the year! Monday to Wednesday next also see at or near or slightly above 32 Celsius forecast.

Kettering is about ten miles down the road from me right now, I would believe it!!!

The vast majority of the Met's real weather stations are Class 4 or Class 5, including that one at Kew. That's 2-5 deg C errors. Even funnier when they decommission one they synthesise the results from surrounding stations. Then we have the change in thermometers. They used to use mercury min-max thermometers, which have time constant in the order of 30s. These have been replaced by electronic ones which can respond at 1 Hz., No they don't postprocess the results to maintain continuity.
