I was there a few years ago, great place to spend the day. Also walk around Fredericksburg and check out the area around it.

It’s definitely on my bucket list, especially since it’s only about 40 miles away.

Chester Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg. Post WW2, the city wanted to honor him with a museum, he wanted it cover the entire war.

A few years ago, it was my second visit, the first was 1997(?). At that time, it was built around the his family's hotel. It since expanded and added a second site. I'd walk between the two sites if you can.

If you go farther west on I-10, there are a number of old Forts that are state parks. I was going to stop at them when I left Fredericksburg, but given the rain, I didn't. I did stop and tour Fort Stockton despite the rain.

If you go past Fredericksburg, make a pit stop for gas and other needs. Repeat at Sonora, TX. Not much west of Sonora. On the AM / FM bands, I couldn't find a station. I think I still had cell service.

Of course, hitting Big Bend is a good idea in spring and fall.
