El Paso isn't that far from where the front lines were at Las Cruces: maybe 25 miles at the most. Ivan did have balls, though, putting heavy transports into a field well within strike range and not that far from the front lines. They were using two fields, it should be pointed out: El Paso IAP and Biggs AAF.
A Soviet vehicle that had a very low life expectancy at the front lines: the ZS-88: a PsyOps loudspeaker vehicle based on the BTR-80. GIs did like the pop music played, but opened fire when broadcasts from Moscow Martha or Havana Hussy were replayed.

The difference between diplomacy and war is this: Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to go to hell so elegantly that they pack for the trip.
War is bringing hell down on that someone.

Photo: A Soviet MiG-23MLD pilot studies his map before a strike mission out of Soviet operated airfield somewhere in Soviet occupied Texas, 1986. The Soviet pilot is carrying a compact AKS-74U carbine. During World War III, VVS pilots often flew with these “Krinkovs” for a grim reason: if you went down over Free American territory, survival came down to what you had in your hands. More firepower meant better odds.
