A new class of general purpose destroyers was ordered in 1975, with the 8000t ships to provide a mixture of AAW, ASW and ASuW capabilities, whilst being classified as 'Destroyers' rather than guided missile ships. They are to reuse some of the names of the recently stricken Whitby class Type 12 frigates of the 1940s and 50s, as well as those of other towns and cities. Eight are under construction with an initial 24 other ships provisionally ordered.

Thank you, kind sir. It is nice to get some feedback, as ever.

I might jot down some little accompanying notes for this one; there are a few tiny 'Easter Eggs' in this little orbat, if they could be termed as such, in terms of names and roles, but it will be more in the realm of explanation than revelation.

A very good feature of Stuart's TBOverse orbats in days of yore was being able to map the changes over time, and once I get the RAF one done, there will be some small measure of comparison with 1960. The first and most noticeable feature is that there hasn't been the same level of force contraction seen if we compared the 1960 British Army, RAF and RN of Earth and that of 1975, for reasons explained at length; and there is also a lot of 1960s ship types that either never made it or were severely chopped off by the fell winds of circumstance.

RN 1975 Orbat Notes

Carriers and Aviation
- The largest driver of increased numbers has been through the fielding of aviation, and specifically ship-borne helicopters and rotodynes, as well as some changes to the RNAS
- The Maltas don’t have long to go before they enter a well earned retirement, which will then result in one of the Audacious class getting the training carrier role
- The Ark Royals and subsequent CVNs are larger, more flexible and carry an air group equivalent to perhaps 3 to 3.5 Earthly supercarriers of a 1975 vintage in terms of capability, range/performance and armament
- Their armament reflects the generational impact of WW2’s grinding carrier offensive through the South China Sea, in that there is no such thing as too much air defence
- The mooted CVVs would mainly be built for the Commonwealth, but having additional decks is seen as a potential boon

Carrier Aviation
- If there is one weakness to their CVGs, it is that they perhaps lack a light attack element in terms of numbers; there is an option that has been gamed out whereby a Sea Harrier squadron could be attached, but they don’t have the legs of the Corsair or Skyhawk II, for example
- In the de Havilland Vanguard, they have a fighter akin to the F-14: 2 x Rolls Royce Empire turbofans w. 18750lbf/32500lbf; Mach 2.85@ 60000ft; ceiling of 85000ft; 875nm combat radius; armament of 4 x 1.25” ADEN and 4 x Firebolt SRAAM, 4 x Skyblade MRAAM and 8 x Galahad LRAAM
- The Phantom is well established in its ‘swing role’ as a secondary fighter, secondary attack plane and, more importantly, being able to do both
- This Blackburn Buccaneer is based on the Blackburn P.150, but hotter: 2 x RR Thames RB.106 turbojets w. 25000lbf; Mach 2.5@ 40000ft, ceiling of 60000ft, 960nm combat range, 24000lb maximum bombload in internal bomb bay (8000lb) and four underwing pylons
- The two new 1970s planes are the EE Scimitar and the Fairey Firefly
- The former is based on the Hawker-Siddeley P.1207, an F-18 like fighter-bomber with 2 x Bristol Hercules reheat turbofans (14000lbf dry/24500 reheat) and a top speed of Mach 2.4, 12 external hardpoints for 16,000lb maximum warload and a combat radius of 640nm
- The Firefly is a strike fighter akin to the Vought V-507 with an F-15 tail in appearance, and in the general class of the F-111B Vindicator II in performance: 2 x Rolls-Royce Empire 18000/27500lb engines, 20,000lb maximum warload, Mach 2.7 top speed and a combat radius of 780nm
- The Supermarine Excalibur strike bomber is based on the BAC Type 589. It is equipped powered by 2 x Rolls Royce Empire turbofans w. 24000/36000lbf; a maximum speed of Mach 3.125@ 70000ft; a combat ceiling of 80000ft; 1250nm combat radius; 2 x 1.25” ADEN; 32000lb bombload, including nominal capacity for self defence missiles
- The Sea Harrier isn’t a derivation of the P.1127, but the P.1154:
1 x Bristol BS125 Pegasus w. 32000lbf; Mach 2.5 @40000ft; ceiling of 60000ft; 425nm combat radius; 4 x Firebolt, 2 x Skyblade, 4 x 1.25” ADEN cannon; 8000lb bombload
- It is mainly deployed on the CVSLs and CVHAs, but there is some consideration and testing of some sort of deployment on fleet carriers for some contingencies
- The Fairey Swordfish is a British counterpart to the A/S-3 Viking ASW/ASuW, with both planes absolutely having a strong anti-ship and ground attack secondary role

Battleships and Battlecruisers
- The Superbs are going to be stricken from the second half of 1976, leaving an all nuclear battlefleet
- The question of further orders for the Tigers is one being kicked down the road

Cruisers
- New cruiser designs are still under development, with the oldest Leander turning 20 in 1979, and having a nominal service life of 25 years; it would take an equivalent of an NTU style modernisation to eke out but a few more years on top of that
- The Counties are very large, reflecting the costs of design and mission creep

Submarines
- The Barhams and Revenges are due to decommission soon, as the earlier designs are replaced by the Trafalgars
- A successor SSBN class armed with a next generation SLBM, probably based on the Solaris missile, is under development
- There is a need for new non-nuclear submarine class to replace the Oberons, possibly similar in some respects to our Upholders

Destroyers:
The Cs and Ds are to be stricken soon, and there is consideration of selling the Es, Fs and Gs
- The remaining 152 ships of the H-Z flotillas will provide the backbone of the DDG force, augmented by the new Whitbys/Type 43s. The use of that Type number isn’t a particular indicator that they look like the @ Type 43s
- RN postwar destroyer design grew out of late WW2 building and the chains of gold inflicted by it. Essentially, after the Wartime Emergency destroyers, there were 6 C class flotillas and 4 Weapon class flotillas, followed by 32 Battles in 1943, 32 in 1944 and 64 in 1945; only 16 of the 1945 ships were completed down the line
- This glut of new, very decent, large destroyers put a stake through the heart of what we’d think of as the Darings, which on Dark Earth were very powerful 4800t super destroyers with 5.25” guns supported by a lot of AA. The closest Earthly ships to them would be the early 1950s Cruiser-Destroyers with an extra gun, and the Mitschers with their original gun armament
- As there were a lot of perfectly good Battles, their urgency dropped, and as this occurred, Korea kicked off and there was an urgent need for a lot of frigates. As well as this, guided missiles were coming along in leaps and bounds, such that the likes of Tartar/Templar could be fielded on a large destroyer hill
- The first Daring flotilla of a planned 6 was reordered as the A class DDGs
- 1950s RN DDGs essentially had County or Bristol sized hulls, but with more American style missile magazines rather than Sea Slug, and four single gun mounts in ABXY. Their missile launcher was foreward and their helicopter hangar aft
- The Type DLGs are double ended ships whose displacement bulked up a fair bit during design, construction and testing
- The next class of DDGs after the Zs will apparently be known as the Battles, and be around 9600t
- Should Destroyer Escorts be acquired, they will fill an interesting gap between fleet destroyers and frigates

Frigates
- Similar to destroyers, the best way to understand the evolution of British frigates in 1945-1975 is to look how they got there. The frigate returned to major naval service as a type with the escort role through the War, and at the end, the bulk of RN numbers were made up of vessels with a relatively limited postwar life - the 254 River, 129 Captain and 47 Colony class frigates were seen as too slow for modern submarine threats and were too small for future growth, leaving just the 78 larger 2500t 25 knot Loch class as vessels that could be of significant use in the postwar world
- This lead to a dual track approach of the development of a new ASW fast frigate, the Type 12, and the conversion of 60 Standard type destroyers to Type 15 fast frigate
- These two types were accompanied in the 1950s by the Type 13/Hunt class and Type 14/Captain class, which were later rebadged as corvettes in the 1960s during one of the Andrew's frequent bouts of nomenclature alteration; the real reason for this change was to be able to successfully decry the RN's lack of frigates when the 1960s generation of ships were being proposed, but given the general receptiveness of the PM at the time, this wasn't a particularly difficult task
- The Type 12 was an excellent design for the threats of the 1945-1955 period, and came early enough and in large enough numbers to make it very much worthwhile. However, once the Soviets fielded nuclear submarines, the threat picture changed yet again, making them a bit too small to fit the new generation of weapons and, most significantly, to operate an ASW helicopter with dipping sonar effectively in rough Atlantic conditions
- The end of the 1950s saw the entry of the River class frigates, which were helicopter capable, and the guided missile Tribal class frigates, which provided the prospect of short range defensive missiles for convoys and ASW hunting groups
- Frigates were getting more and more expensive at this time, with the mid 1960s being one of the 'inflection points' of the Cold War period on DE and Earth where the cost of computers, electronic systems, radars, sonars and guided weapons 'knock things up a notch' (albeit sans spice weasel)
- The Treasury did try and make noises around 1963/64 about limiting the cost of the next generation of frigates to between £3.5 and 4.5 million, but these were quashed when Stanley Barton entered Number 10 on a platform of being stronger than the Conservatives on defence. This gave scope for the new frigate to not fall into the category of 'fitted for, but not with'
- At this time, cooperation with the Americans and Canadians in development of weapons systems was the flavour de jeur, leading to the Joint Light ASW Frigate, initially described as "displacing ~4800t, carrying a single medium calibre gun, light AA guns, some sort of light AAW missile, ASW missiles, a pair of Sea King helicopters and a towed array sonar"
- This set of requirements inflated and contorted over the next few years, resulting in the RN Type 21 FFGs and the USN Knox class DEG:
HMS Amazon: 5000 tons; 480ft x 50ft x 18ft; COGAG; Range 5000nm @ 20kts; 1 x twin 125mm, 4 x 2.5"/75, 4 x twin 42mm, 4 x 25mm; 1 Legion CWS; 1 twin launcher with 24 Sea Wolf + 8 Icarus, 8 Paladin SSM; 2 x quadruple 15” Sting Ray ASW TT, 4 x 15" ASW rocket launchers; 2 x Westland Sea King, 35 knots
USS Knox: 5200 tons; 480ft x 50ft x 18ft; COGAG; Range 5000nm @ 20kts; 1 x twin 5”, 4 x 50mm, 6 x twin 25mm; 1 Legion 37mm CWS; 1 x 24 Sea Sparrow, 8 x ASROC, 8 Harpoon SSM; 2 x quadruple 15” Sting Ray ASW TT; 2 x SH-3 Sea King, 32 knots
- The single medium calibre guns grew into twin mounts and there was an increase in design displacement of 5-10%, but the most significant increase came in cost, which was eventually £7.7 million for Amazon and $39 million for Knox
- Following on from the ASW focused Type 21s, the Type 22s sported longer range missiles than the Tribals, and there are plans to fit a pair of smaller Sea Rapier systems on each, directly in new construction and on the first refit of those ships already building or in service
- What of the Type 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20? The Type 16s were a proposed cheaper alternative to the Type 15s that never saw the light of day as they offered an uncompetitive price/capability ratio; Type 17 was for a mass production, austere version of the Type 12s; Type 18 were the River class; Type 19 a missile armed AAW version of the Rivers that was not built due to increased orders for the baseline ASW version; and Type 20 was a large frigate which was subsequently built for export to the South American navies

Corvettes
- The return of the corvette name, as mentioned above, was initially a gambit to fudge escort numbers, but over time, a clearer distinction between the corvette (1250-2500t) and the frigate (4000-6000t) has grown apparent. The earlier late 1940s/early 1950s corvettes were decent ships, but even the larger ones couldn't fit a frontline helicopter or have any real margin for a useful guided weapon armament
- The Castles are little pocket rockets which do compared favourably with many Earthly frigates, but they are still mainly employed in suitably 'corvettish missions', such as coastal convoys, littoral operations, green water zones, anti-piracy patrol and other such unglamourous grunt work

OPVs/Sloops
- The sloop never really went away, put have changed their names around the place. The wartime Black Swan survivors variously were known as frigates, patrol vessels and sloops before they were decommissioned in 1962, with the replacement Island class serving in the frontline sloop role during the 1960s, prior to being kicked downstairs to the Fishery Protection Squadron, which has Arctic, Home, Channel and North Atlantic divisions
- The late 1950s Shakespearean class Patrol Ships/Patrol Sloops were transferred to HM Coastguard, which has a rather broader remit here, and has a dual-hatted military/civilian role in mobilisation
- A number of significantly larger sloops, effectively light cruiser sized ships, are in service in some very specific areas and roles
- The mainstream of the RN's OPV fleet are the new Black Swans, which in wartime would be able to switch reasonably seamlessly into the third class convoy escort role

Coastal Forces
- The biggest change is that they exist
- Britain has invested in a small yet significant number of FACs during the 1950s and 1960s, driven in large part by the situations regarding Indonesia and China, and also by seeking to be able to contribute to potential wartime operations in the Baltic and littoral Norwegian Sea, and, by extension, maximise British influence over Denmark, Norway and Sweden
- Operations in Malaya and Vietnam, both coastal and riverine, drove some of the developments seen in this orbat in this regard

Weapons
- Gauntlet is a British equivalent to ASROC, Icarus is a more streamlined Ikara, and Sea Rapier is, as the name suggests, a naval adaption of the PT.428 which is equivalent in role to Sea Sparrow
- The 125mm is a 1960s gun, adapting the land based weapon in single and twin mounts, and akin in general appearance to the AK-130, albeit in a nicer, more ‘Western looking’ turret
- The 105mm gun comes from a nominal marriage of the Vickers 4”/62 and the 36pdr/105mm tank gun, with the Swedish Bofors 105mm coastal gun acting as the completely unrelated postman who delivers more than letters
- The 2.5” is a British attempt to outclass the 57mm. It has its ups and downs, but has some quite good performance
- The 34mm DACR is a quad ADEN type revolver cannon mount that packs a fearsome wallop and trains/traverses unnaturally fast through...unnatural means
- The 25mm is the general purpose, Jack-of-all-trades, junk-basher autocannon deployed in mounts like a cross between the Bushmaster Mk 38 and the earlier Oerlikon
