Scuttled in the Atlantic by the Brazilian navy.

Well, that's going to piss off a lot of people, excluding the Brazilian Navy.
She's been turned away from scrapping because of asbestos and has been drifting around for months. The environmentalists are all, "OMG, it'll poison the seabed if sunk". The Brazilian Navy are happy just to get rid of her, and can tolerate a bit of bad international press for a few weeks.

The mooring lines look to be at a strange angle given the depth that she was sunk in.

Is that because she's sliding sternwards?

Or theory number 2, they were chains used for the tow and have only just been released from the winches
Re: São Paulo, ex-Foch, is gone
Yeah there’s some other photo of her under tow, looks like the chains were used.warshipadmin wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 5:46 am Or theory number 2, they were chains used for the tow and have only just been released from the winches

This artist impression of the former NAe Sao Paulo's "controlled sinking is nice.

Question.
Did she ever have one operational day under the Brazilian flag as a commissioned vessel that actually conducted air ops?
By that I mean launch and recover aircraft that actually had a mission other than testing ?

I guess the Brazilians ultimately didn't give a Foch.

Seems so. She was delivered to Brazil in early 2001 and served with the Brazilian navy for a bit over 4 years, mostly training Brazilian A-4 and Argentinian Super Etendard and S-2 crews. She suffered a major engineering casualty in mid 2005 which took her out of service, after which she was extensively (and expensively!) repaired, refitted, and modernized; she then suffered another major fire in 2012, before she could return to active service, and this time the Brazilian government (eventually) decided she was beyond economical repair.

To anyone who would take it. No one would. Kind of like the fat guy at the senior prom.

Agreed, something looks off. Photos I can find of SAO PAULO only have one catapult forward, on the port side. That photo clearly has two.MikeKozlowski wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 8:12 pm...Guys,
I think that's Oriskany (CV34) going to her reward as an artificial reef.

Note that SP has a bridege that is fat at the ottom and gets thinner as it goes up, 34 has a thin bit at the bottom and then gets wider.

Definitely CV-34. The top of the island is a match. The cylindrical thing and the extending arm.
