I need a drink... (new job stuff)

Post by gtg947h »

This afternoon I accepted a new position at a certain large company we're all familiar with, after exhausting every possible avenue to try and stay with my soon-to-be ex-employer. I even had everyone in my chain of command up to the senior VP personally going to bat for my case, and some HR drone still shot me down.

We needed to move because my wife and son have medical stuff (mental and physical) that you can't really get decent care for in Savannah on any timeline that doesn't stretch years (if it's available at all) and nearby family gives us a support network that we didn't have there. Problem is, Atlanta isn't exactly teeming with jobs for folks in my field, especially if you're not young and willing to work startup hours. It took nearly 15 months from the decision to start looking to getting the offer (and it was the first interview I got after all that time).

I should be excited, I guess. It's hard to be, though. The job is a step down in position and pay, and probably quite a bit less interesting than the one I'm leaving. I'm leaving behind a team I've worked with for almost 11 years and a company I've worked at for almost 22. And I'm kicking myself for not accepting the position I was lined up for a few years ago with the new place, it would have saved me a lot of trouble.

If I could have retired instead, I'd have done so, but that's probably at least 15 years in the future. Though, it has actually gotten me thinking about the possibility as more than just a nebulous future thing that I'm saving up for but have no real hope of actually achieving. In the meantime, happy birthday to me, here's a pay cut.

We'll see what I think of the new place. But I'll probably keep my eyes out for remote jobs and stuff at Delta, too.

I'm the meantime I'm "celebrating" drinking alone on the couch :|

That’s totally a reasonable mix of emotions.

You have to put family first, and do what you have to do to take care of them.

But it’s also reasonable to feel this is a least bad of available options and not an exciting new professional opportunity. It’s also entirely reasonable to feel a mix of sadness and helpless rage at the inflexible dipshit in HR who is going to cost the company a lot of money because they’re on a power trip.

I sympathize.
