Long Lifers in Other Countries

Post by jemhouston »

I wish I had thought about when while Stuart was alive, but I didn't think of it.

We know of them in the US, UK, Switzerland, Japan, and Thailand. Was there ever a mentation of them in Germany or Russia?

I find it strange.

The only one I can remember from Russia was Rasputin. (The knowledge that he was a long lifer drove him insane.) I am almost certain there were others, but that is the only one I can remember. IIRC he listed a whole bunch of people in the thread where someone posted the Keanu Reeves is immortal meme. If someone wants to use the way back machine that is the place I would look.

It’s not so much strange as more to do with:

Those countries being the centre points of the main and side narratives;

Those countries being, or becoming, the homes of the main groups at different points in time (the U.K. Avenury Circle split into the US and U.K. groups)- as well as producing their own.

It’s important to note that we have Conrad (Spanish), Loki & Branwen (Norse), plus of course the Seer and his group all hailing from various parts of the Eastern Med/ Greece & Middle East, although they ended up elsewheee.

Didn’t we have a WW2 Russian fighter pilot becoming long-lived? I’m sure there was a short story about it.

Paul Lazuruski I believe his last name was. He was a fighter and test pilot from the stories set in the 50s and 60s. He eventually became Lilith's partner and shows up occasionally.

There's a short story about a guy who was long lived, was in Germany and got a serious case of cancer from The Big One. I think he might have been Scottish or Irish, as I seem to recall his name was something like "first name mac second name". I seem to recall also that in some of the Conrad stories, Conrad would note other Daemons in the places they were solving crimes. I want to say there's some evidence in one of the books that there's some Indian Daemons as well.

The implication, at least in my mind, is that Daemons are fairly wide spread, if extremely rare. I think Stuart once said the ratio of Daemons to baseline was one in 9.2 million. And since no one knew the long lived were that way until they started transitioning, lots of Daemons died in their youth, so the number of Daemons out there was very low in comparison to what it could have been.

There’s an Indian Daemon in Hollywood in Eye of the Pretender, set in 1966. Sha Cuva was the name.

Manannan mac Lir (Irish/ Gaelic, part of the Swiss group) was the chap with the face cancers in Eye of the Imposter, set in 1961.

Was Odwin North considered to be a Daemon before he was assassinated by Loki?

I seem to recall that was the case, and the guy had gone sorta nuts because he was going to "live forever".

Yes, Noth was a long-lifer. He was Odin, THE Odin. Loki’s lifelong mentor.

...FWIW, I've become interested in the backstory of Warhammer 40K. Not wanting to play the game; Lord knows I have enough time sinks as it is. But the backstory of the Emperor flatly states that he is immortal, and was born on Earth about 8000 BCE - and has near God-like psychic powers. To make a long question short, I wonder if there was an offshoot group of long-lifers with psychic powers who stayed even more in the background...

Psykers!!!

Being serious, some of the novels (and there are very, very many) are rather enjoyable. Sone less so. But it’s worth a peek or two- I have a number of the books but I’ve never played the game.
