Mobile phones frequently logging users out

Post by Johnnie Lyle »

Is anyone else who predominantly access the Board on the browser of their cell phone noticing that it will routinely log you out when trying to navigate the board?

Yes. Probably when your IP address changes.

I don’t think it’s that, even considering the Third World nature of California’s cell network. It happens when I am connected to WiFi or when I am on cell data but stationary, not only when I transition between locations.

It’s literally read topic, hit the new posts button, get logged out.

I get that on my iPhone, I believe it’s the iCloud private relay service that is causing it. It keeps changing the IP-adress to mask it from the website, causing the logouts. With a (paid) VPN service enabled or with the private relay just disabled you won’t get it.

On mine, it logs me out when I leave the site, but I can cruise all over it as long as I want and it stays in.

How long has it been doing that?

Mine didn’t until a few weeks ago.

It’s been doing it for me on my iPhone since the last iteration of the board. I can browse and post on topics for ages, but if I go to another tab and then come back, I’ll be logged out.

Since the private relay feature was introduced, but I think it may be due to differences in the Apple servers used in different parts of the world. From what I’ve seen from others the effects can vary depending on where you are. You could test it by going into settings > your apple account (top tab) > iCloud > Private Relay Service, and turn it to off. Then try out the board for a bit and see if you still get logged out. If not then you’ve identified the problem.

I've noticed that its been making me verify that I'm not a robot a lot lately. Is that possibly part of the problem?

I believe that this usually happens when you are presenting as from an IP-range that there’s been known issues with, as in having detected bots using this IP-range and such, by the software in use.

Perhaps relevant...

When my usual bus to weekly 'budget mall' passes local Tech & Uni-grade college, which apparently has a 'pico-cell' to support the concentration of 'users', most on-phone bus passengers get 'drop-out' ranging from garbled voice to site links lost.

As I understand it, not due to the cell-transition itself, but having several in quick succession.

Some networks and phone OS do better than others...

I’ve found out something that’s possibly related to this. It seems that the dynamic IP range I was getting assigned by my ISP wound up as flagged for VPN association on some black list used by certain streaming providers. In my case it meant that Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ would suddenly flat out refuse to work on my home network. After some fault analysis which led me to conclude the above, I requested a public IP adress for my router from my ISP which resolved those issues instantly. But it also seems to have noticeably reduced the amount of logouts I get here on the board when connected via the home network. So that could be an option to try if anyone keeps having issues along those lines.

[Edit] It is with some irony I note that when I tried running the two above mentioned streaming services on my phone through an actual VPN just now as a test they don’t setect it. Nice job streaming service IT people.
