So a lightning strike did a number on a monument in Sweden. The monument is located in Kvidinge, and was erected in 1826 in memory of Prince Karl August of Denmark. He had been selected as the heir to King Karl XIII of Sweden since the King had no children, and Karl August was formally adopted by him. However not before long Karl August was inspecting a military exercise in 1810, suffered a presumed stroke and fell dead from his horse. A certain French marshal was then selected as successor instead.
Now we’ll see what will happen to the monument going forward. It’s owned by the government so perhaps it’ll be rebuilt. It’s perhaps not the most important of monuments but I get a bit sad when even a smaller part of history gets destroyed like this. Below you can see what it used to look like and what is now left of it.
