Thank you guys for the ST lore, but I agree this should be moved elsewhere.

And it started because I noted that something said in 5th Marine Division sounded positively Klingon, then posted the Klingon saying that matched the Marine statement. I found that Klingon saying in the Klingon Bird of Prey Owner’s Workshop Manual, in case anyone is wondering…

Axanar, or Donatu V?

I don’t know about Donatu V, but it’s strongly implied that the Battle of Axanar is in early 2245…

So, who wants to start the thread?

During the Battle of Axanar, a young staff sergeant was separated from his unit. He saw something that looked important. It was, the was the part of the HQ that held the unit's battle honors and flags. Guarding it was a unit of veterans, think older John Wicks. The warriors that killed the Klingon Gods would have been this group.

When the rest of the Marines showed up, the staff sergeant was the only person (barely) alive. Reinforcement arrived and they destroyed the HQ and captured the battle honors and flags. About that time a cease fire was called. Commanders from both sides toured the battle

The Klingon Honor Guard was found to have gone down swinging. Most of their hands still had weapons in or near their hands. How many of those hands were still attached to the body is in dispute. The Marine couldn't get his K-Bar out of one Klingon so he picked up a Bat’leth. When that broke, he got another one. The Marine commander said, "They died well and fought like Marines. They should be legends."

Normally, when a Klingon unit loses the battle honors and flags, the unit is disestablished and, in the histories, the name is replaced with Unit ## dishonored. They division was reestablished, but without the Guards designation it had. They got it back during the Dominion war when with the 5th MarDiv recaptured Betazed.

A year after the battle, the Klingons sent a pendant designating the 5th MarDiv as a Guards unit. Every anniversary of the battle, the 5th MarDiv drink a Blood Wine toast to the battle.
Make the Marine a Private First Class or a Lance Corporal, and it’s perfect. And the Klingon unit drinks a Whiskey toast to that battle.

I based the tale on Poohbah's Battle of Lubbock / aka Grant theft Nukes. Which is why I made him an NCO. The Klingons drinking Whiskey is a nice touch.

Okay, glad I could help!

On second thought, if we made the Dominion War battle the Battle of Chin’toka, it would really work better than Betazed (which was a quick little guerrilla operation)…

I was thinking of the two divisions trying to see who either close the pincers to encircle the enemy forces.

Say a Klingon second lieutenant was separated from his unit and set upon by a Jem'Hadar platoon. He says, "This is a good day to day."

At the end, he's barely standing, weapons out of power or broken. He picks up a rock, "Time to become a legend." Just a Federation second lieutenant from a certain family shows up, "You need to stick around to make sure the Opera is right and kills a Jem'Hadar just as the Klingon throws the rock to kill a Jem'Hadar that was rising up from the ground to smite the Marine.

Then the forces who were suppose to close the gap shows up and both commanders say "Damn it's a tie. Only thing to do, raise a toast and flag.

That's how the iconic image of Federation and Klingon Marines raising their battle flags came to be.

Note, they raised the other's flags.

Too over the top or not enough?

It works, and works well for Chin’toka, but not for Betazed, where Klingon ground forces weren’t involved in retaking the planet.
