THE U.S.S. ROBERT HEINLEIN:

Post by jemhouston »

From Instapundit
THE U.S.S. ROBERT HEINLEIN: A friend writes:

The U.S.S. Robert A. Heinlein Campaign!

We want the new Secretary of the Navy – John Phelan — to name a future DDG-51 Flight III
destroyer for Robert A. Heinlein.

************************
It is the prerogative of the Secretary of the Navy to name Navy vessels. Navy policy is to name destroyers for deceased members of the Navy.

We want the new Secretary of the Navy – John Phelan — to name a future DDG-51 Flight III destroyer for Robert A. Heinlein.

This would happen if lots of people write asking him to name a future Arleigh
Burke-class destroyer for Heinlein.

Phelan’s address is:
The Honorable John Phelan
Secretary of the Navy
Room 4E686
Defense Pentagon
Washington, D.C. 20301

More information may be found at the Campaign website.

www.USSRobertAHeinlein.com.

Good idea. Endorsed.

While the science fiction nurd in me applauds the idea, the Old Navy in me thinks about the many good sailors and Marines who were KIA with citations for heroism that such ships are normally named for.

Yes, acknowledging the excursions in recent years for “heroes of political correctness” that should never have happened.

So I have mixed feelings about this.

How about a science research ship?

I still waiting when USS William J. Clinton (CVN-82) and USS George W. Bush (CVN-83) are going to be renamed, ore is CVN going to be named the USS Donald J Trump and they do not change the name as the next president can change the names again.

I certainly hope so. Just because you're President doesn't mean you merit having a ship named for you.

I’ve always thought naming carriers after Presidents was a not so great idea. Or any political figure.

Although if recovering state legislators were included…..

One way to get around that is ban naming a ship until 25 years after their death.

I liked naming the boomers after preferably dead key national figures, mostly politicians. A boomer with a passle of nukes is about the only thing that approaches the destructive capacity of a politician.

On the flip side, I think we have all seen some objectively stupid names become hallowed due to the sacrifices made by the people involved. So, as long as we keep having good sailors, we will have good ships, even if the people the ships originally commemorated didn’t deserve the honor.

Heinlein would probably decline the honor of a DDG, judging his naval service less important than his work lighting the fire of humanity in space.

Stuart had it right.

Heinlein Station.

Though I would prefer we name the first commercial station in orbit over a Lagrange one, and that we maintain that name right up to the gigantic Spacedocks of Star Trek.
