My ancestry is a little more than half German, a little less than half Irish and a fifth of Scotch.
Once you're all done laughing at the joke....
One of my mother's Great grandfathers was German. The family black sheep, so to say, until such things became irrelevant due to both age and no one giving a shit anymore. My father's family was fresh off the boat from Bocholt in Germany in 1928. So I'm about 56.25% German and 43.75% Irish.
More than enough to annoy the shit out of everyone by adding the completely uncessecary O' to everyone's last name today.

Hard to tell from the wrong side of the Irish Sea. It was the most read story on the RTE news website this morning, so there is at least something there. Conor McGregor recently lost a very high profile civil rape case so it would not be a surprise for it to be a major news story.

Is it me, or did they REALLY want to drive home the point that he didn't represent the views of the people of Ireland? I think they said it 5 or 6 times in the article.

Beyond the recent Rape case he lost, there is also the issue of his rather strident views on migration and claimed involvement in starting riots in Dublin.
Ireland has a rather unusual situation with migration - historically there have been huge numbers of Irish emigrants, principally to the UK where around 10% of the population qualify for Irish citizenship by descent (significantly more than the population of the Republic of Ireland). In my lifetime Ireland has got rich enough that they are starting to see significant immigration, which has been something of a shock on many levels. The mainstream view is that given the size of the Irish diaspora and their history of emigrating elsewhere for economic reasons they have a moral obligation to accept inwards migration. However, a minority are very much against it - for reasons that are largely but not entirely racist in nature - and McGregor has set himself as a figurehead for these.

Yes. First or second generation descent (i.e. one or more grandparents with Irish citizenship) means you qualify for an Irish passport - that's the metric I used for the UK where it accounts for 10% of the population. It's why the migration debate is significantly different in Ireland than elsewhere and MAGA-esque rhetoric on immigration (as per Conor McGregor) gets people very upset.
