No, I do not want to go down it.
It’s an up or down situation.

At least it's not vertical and the people using it will be reasonably fit!

Holy F&CK! That's a hell of a way to get out.

Question....

What kind of emergency would make the slide helpful? I would think that the vast majority of the time, if you need an emergency evacuation, its because something is about to blow up. A fully fueled stack would tend to incinerate the entire slide before you had the time to get to the bottom of it, wouldn't it?

Someone correct my thinking, please.

It could be fire on the pad, not the booster. It could also be they rather have it and not need that, need it and not have it.

If there are people at the top of the tower, it's a method to get them down fast. If it's just the crew in the capsule, that's what the capsule rockets are for as in the top trusswork on the Mercury and Gemini capsules. The Shuttle used a zipline system that does the same thing as the SpaceX slide, but with person baskets.

The difference is that the early NASA rockets were fueled, then the people went in. SpaceX loads the self-moving cargo, then fuels if. If there isn't time to hit the escape slide, or the capsule jettison, then it doesn't matter anyway. But using the escape slide or zipline is a heck of a lot faster than trying to go down the stairs or hoping the elevator still works, especially in a spacesuit.

The US has never had an actual problem where these would have applied. The Apollo 1 fire was inside the capsule. Shepherd suffered an inconvenience. The Russians only had Soyuz MS-10, which was after liftoff and the capsule system worked, and Soyuz T-10-1 which had a launch pad explosion six seconds after the LES saved the capsule. The Chinese have not had a reported problem.
