Friendly Fire Ain't....
...Gettysburg (CG-64) somehow managed to whack an F-18 off the Truman last night. Crew ejected and is okay, but ejections can do bad things to humans in the long term.

Re: Friendly Fire Ain't....
At least we know how the crew survived:
"It was a tanker crew returning to land on the carrier about 10 miles out. They recognized the missile was guiding and punched out about three seconds before the missile hit the jet," the source said.

Apparently there was another Hornet in the pattern, and the Gettysburg let fly at that one, too.Johnnie Lyle wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2024 7:57 pm At least we know how the crew survived:"It was a tanker crew returning to land on the carrier about 10 miles out. This is looking more and more sus by the second.

Honestly I suspect that it will be the same combination of factors we keep seeing in Navy fuckups - poor training, poor equipment maintenance, poor situational awareness, poor communications, poor personnel management and overall poor leadership.Poohbah wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2024 9:06 pmApparently there was another Hornet in the pattern, and the Gettysburg let fly at that one, too.Johnnie Lyle wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2024 7:57 pm At least we know how the crew survived:"It was a tanker crew returning to land on the carrier about 10 miles out. But hey, at least the SM-2 worked?

Was Gettysburg trying to outdo Vincennes?

Re: Friendly Fire Ain't....
Yea, just watched Mooch’s bit with Hozer going over what is known. Unofficial and back channel but -
Holy $h!t
I was getting flashbacks from my days around the boat. Part of the set up reminded me far too uncomfortably of stuff happening around the boat and the “cluster” that almost handed my @$$ to the Norks.
Sooooo
The tanker is on final, case 3, at 10 miles, 250knts and 1200 feet.
(Think about a hostile drone profile. Obviously what the CG CO was thinking)
Two SM-2’s going after two inbound F-18’s, both at 1200 ft and 250 knots configured for recovery.
The presence of mind of one crew to recognize the missile was guiding on them and ejecting THREE SECONDS from impact!!
The presence of mind of the second crew to recognize what happened right in front of them and to successfully evade the second missile AT TWELVE HUNDRED FEET and not fly into the water!!
I’m remembering night, Case 3, pitch black, and imagining wild evasion maneuvering.
Word on the street is that the CG has been relieved of AAWC duties. Ya think!!!
You try to imagine what could go wrong in night combat operations and this is beyond believable. Mooch and Dozer hit the nail on the head when they both said this scenario couldn’t make the cut in one of their novels.
The investigation report will make for some very interesting reading

And even if the tops had hit, would they have detonated?

Probably, it exploded 3000 yards due to Iowa's sharp turn.M.Becker wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 1:04 amjemhouston wrote: ↑Wed Dec 25, 2024 12:52 amSince it was FDR, he was probably having the time of his life.

End of run self destruction?
Doesn't mean the magnetic or impact fuses would have worked.

Re: Friendly Fire Ain't....
No, I think torpedoes just sink if they don't hit anything. Why explode and let them know they were under attack?
The best part was after it was all over. I can't find the exact quote, so from memory.
General Marshall turned to Hap Arnold, "If you want to see the sea give up its dead just watch."
Walking over to Admiral King, Marshall asked, "Tell me Ernie, does this often happen in your navy?"
Admiral King stormed off.
Being from Iowa and going to school in the 60s, this story was well known.

Yes, makes perfect sense, so the fish were still a bit fishy.jemhouston wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 1:02 pmNo, I think torpedoes just sink if they don't hit anything. Why explode and let them know they were under attack?
The appropriate joke for a hit with no detonation would have been: "Admiral, there seems to be something wrong with our torpedoes today."

I would not have wanted to be one of King's aides after that bit.jemhouston wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 1:02 pmNo, I think torpedoes just sink if they don't hit anything. Why explode and let them know they were under attack?

What would've made it worse was if FDR was there and added a pithy comment or two.
Westray: That this is some sort of coincidence. Because they don't really believe in coincidences. They've heard of them. They've just never seen one.

I'm assuming he did, but what he said was left unrecorded. FDR did order no one was supposed to be punished. This was after the entire destroyer was placed under arrest.Rocket J Squrriel wrote: ↑Fri Dec 27, 2024 12:23 amI would not have wanted to be one of King's aides after that bit.jemhouston wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 1:02 pmNo, I think torpedoes just sink if they don't hit anything. Note, favorite quote regarding FDR by General Marshall, "Mr. President, would you please stop referring to the Navy as us and the Army has them."
