Did any-one build a really big 'linear' engine ?

IIRC, when it came to that hapless sub-scale X-craft, also beset by wonky tanks, the engine's thrust turned out a lot less than expected.

I cannot remember seeing a clear explanation, beyond the euphemistic catch-all, 'Significant Non-Linear Scaling Characteristics'...
