The Kit Inventory...

Post by MikeKozlowski »

...So.

Back in April, my IPMS chapter held a show - well planned, well executed, and most of all well attended. We also had a huge vendor section, which is where this starts.

At the very front of the vendors were four huge tables, end to end, tightly stacked eye-level high with kits, and packing boxes under each table also packed. Turns out this was an estate sale from a retired Marine. I'm not exaggerating when I say there were certainly well north of five hundred kits, and possibly close to a thousand.

Now, I am something of a kit hoarder, I have no problems admitting that. But this hit me not so much that he'd never build them but that his wife had to deal with this. I had already decided that after last weekend's show I was going to start culling the herd, but this gave me a little extra incentive. First thing though, you gotta figure out what you got. So, over the last week I've been trying to figure that out. Still got a ways to go, but as of yesterday....the total is 140. Actually slightly less than I thought, but we ain't done yet.

Here's the current list; the number is the scale.

That B26 must be huge. Hmm 18" that's fun. My kit count is 1, a KGV BB, sadly a waterline model I think (I don't know where it is to check!) .

Warshipadmin,

The Monogram Marauder is actually a pretty nice kit, but it's got some issues. There's a new 1/48 Marauder out from ICM that is absolutely perfect, but the cost is way outta my league (I'd say 95% of my acquisitions now are from IPMS shows and raffles).

And by the way - 1 kit is a rookie number; you gotta pump those numbers up. ;)

The kit comes with some very nice figures, and I have seen some stunning dioramas with it.

Now that's a trip down memory lane. Between about age 10 and age 15 I assembled about a hundred kits, many of which I see here. Looking back on it, I didn't do a very good job on most of them. But I spent hours in my favorite store trying to figure out how to spend that week's allowance.

I get back into the hobby about fifteen years ago, but I'm generally only doing one kit at a time. Lack of space and Mrs. Thomas' patience being the controlling factors.

Nah, that's not a collection, not a rookie number even less than a piker.

When I was supposed to be studying for my A levels I machined a small steam engine from castings (https://www.stuartmodels.com/product/st ... nmachined/) on one of these Image. As it turned out that got me my first job, so probably the best use of my time!
