1) Normally operates two Super Lynx of 22 Squadron SAAF but can also carry single Oryx.
2) Still working up.
3) Currently configured as OPV pending replacement; missiles and aft 76mm gun have been removed.
4) Stripped and currently waiting conversion to OPV configuration.
5) Still fitting out at Kiel on outbreak of war, was able to proceed to Emden under her own power.
6) Under construction at either Kiel (S102), or Emden (S103); S102 likely to have been destroyed shortly before Kiel fell to advancing WARPACT forces.
7) Ordered as civilian research vessels to circumvent sanctions, current plans are to upgrade them with second-generation mine-hunting systems.
8) Formerly the Danish tanker Annam. Purchased by the SANS and converted into an AOR. Modified in the early 1980s to carry and support 300 troops. Was elderly by 2005 and spent most of her time laid up.

10) Icebreaker, sealift and replenishment ship. Could carry a pair of Oryx helicopters, four LCU and 600 troops. By 2005 was considered increasingly expensive to operate & was not suitable to support the Valour class frigates, as she was too slow. A new sealift and replenishment ship was considered a priority for the SANS.
11) Was built by Yarrow in Glasgow; currently plans are to replace her with an, as yet un-named Echo class survey ship.

While it did include most of the former Commando units, it also incorporated former members of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and mainly non-white farm workers, who had previously been excluded. As of 2005, changes to the names of the TDF units to better reflect South Africa’s diverse heritage was still ongoing.

In this orbat I’ve specified what vehicle each unit has, rather than just, for example, saying armoured, or mechanised etc.
