It’s traditional in that part of the world. IIRC, a lot of the panzer divisions in Manstein’s attempt to relieve Paulus had tanks disabled by mice chewing on the wires.

Never heard that.

Last year, found out the pickup took some rat damage to the cables.

Yes, some types of electrical insulation tastes nice to them. I believe this the story goes, the Wehrmacht standard was lacquer-impregnated fabric, and the rodents just yummed it up.

We had a snowmobile when I was a kid that was stored during the off season. When we pulled it out half the seat was gone and most of the wiring needed to be replaced.

Sounds like a long-term solution would be to simply add a bittering agent to the insulation.
