Next America-class will be named .....

Post by Lordroel »

So the next America class amphibious assault ship with the hull number LHA-9 will be named USS Fallujah.

I am not sure how I feel about that....

Yes, the Marines (and others, if I am not mistaken) did some stellar work there, but the entire war was closer to a feces fest than anything else.

Do we have any ships named after Vietnam battles?

You mean we had USS Hue City, on 23 September 2022, the Navy held a decommissioning ceremony for Hué City at Naval Station Norfolk.

We’ve fought a lot of feces-fest wars lately. Arguably Korea and Vietnam fit that category, and USS HUÉ CITY and USS CHOSIN commemorate awful struggles similar to Fallujah.

If anything, it’s Gulf War I that’s missing a ship commemorating it.

True, but finding Marine battles worthy of a ship name might be the issue.
USS Kuwait International Airport doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.
Khafji was mostly fought by Arab allies with Marine support.

About the only battle I can think of is Battle of 73 Easting.

Belleau Wood is a good name, Kuwait, only if the country pays for the ships and bribes the administration.

There is already a expeditionary mobile base named the USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB-3).

USS Khafji and USS Kuwait City would be good ones, IMO.

Concur. It’s hard to remember thirty odd years on, but we absolutely didn’t expect the absolute debacle for the Iraqis that was Desert Storm. We expected to take serious losses.

Thankfully, we were a lot better than we thought we were, and the Iraqis a lot worse.

Jeez, was that thirty years ago? I’m feeling old all of a sudden….

And right you are. We expected a much tougher fight on the ground and much higher casualties - which is WHY such a large, multinational force was assembled.
