Next America-class will be named .....
So the next America class amphibious assault ship with the hull number LHA-9 will be named USS Fallujah.

I am not sure how I feel about that....
Yes, the Marines (and others, if I am not mistaken) did some stellar work there, but the entire war was closer to a feces fest than anything else.
Do we have any ships named after Vietnam battles?

You mean we had USS Hue City, on 23 September 2022, the Navy held a decommissioning ceremony for Hué City at Naval Station Norfolk.clancyphile wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 3:14 pm

We’ve fought a lot of feces-fest wars lately. Arguably Korea and Vietnam fit that category, and USS HUÉ CITY and USS CHOSIN commemorate awful struggles similar to Fallujah.Belushi TD wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 3:01 pm I am not sure how I feel about that....

If anything, it’s Gulf War I that’s missing a ship commemorating it.
Re: Next America-class will be named .....
True, but finding Marine battles worthy of a ship name might be the issue.Johnnie Lyle wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 6:05 pm If anything, it’s Gulf War I that’s missing a ship commemorating it.
USS Kuwait International Airport doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.
Khafji was mostly fought by Arab allies with Marine support.

About the only battle I can think of is Battle of 73 Easting.Johnnie Lyle wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 6:05 pmWe’ve fought a lot of feces-fest wars lately. Belleau Wood is a good name, Kuwait, only if the country pays for the ships and bribes the administration.Johnnie Lyle wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 7:20 pmYou could do KUWAIT.James1978 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 6:52 pmTrue, but finding Marine battles worthy of a ship name might be the issue.Johnnie Lyle wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 6:05 pm If anything, it’s Gulf War I that’s missing a ship commemorating it.

How about Chesty Puller?
Re: Next America-class will be named .....
There is already a expeditionary mobile base named the USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB-3).

Concur. It’s hard to remember thirty odd years on, but we absolutely didn’t expect the absolute debacle for the Iraqis that was Desert Storm. We expected to take serious losses.clancyphile wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 9:20 pmUSS Khafji and USS Kuwait City would be good ones, IMO.James1978 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 6:52 pmTrue, but finding Marine battles worthy of a ship name might be the issue.Johnnie Lyle wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 6:05 pm If anything, it’s Gulf War I that’s missing a ship commemorating it.

Thankfully, we were a lot better than we thought we were, and the Iraqis a lot worse.

And right you are. We expected a much tougher fight on the ground and much higher casualties - which is WHY such a large, multinational force was assembled.
