More parental concerns
More parental concerns
Seems like my dad possibly had a stroke this morning. He’s in the hospital now in a stroke ward being examined. He was taking a shower and collapsed as his left leg stopped working properly it seems. Will have to wait for a bit to see what the doctors figure out.

Re: More parental concerns
If he's had a stroke, listen to the doctors to see what they say. Post hospital, make sure he does the physical therapy he needs. That made the difference between my Mother getting home for Christmas (her stroke happened late January) and not making it (cousin's stroke roughly the same time).
Prayers on the way.

The doctors have evaluated a bit more now and believe that he had a minor clot. No large clots visible on scans, and only the leg is affected. No signs of facial paralysis or anything of that nature. So hopefully it will turn out to be something that can be managed well, with time.

Hopefully your father sees it as a warning sign and is amenable to lifestyle changes to avoid additional ones.Micael wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 11:00 amYeah I’ll do that, thanks.jemhouston wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 10:56 am If he's had a stroke, listen to the doctors to see what they say. Yeah, but I’m not entirely sure what he can change. He’s not really doing anything dietary or otherwise that would seem to invite this. Plus he was on a prescribed aspirin dosage intended to prevent this.Johnnie Lyle wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 2:46 pmHopefully your father sees it as a warning sign and is amenable to lifestyle changes to avoid additional ones.Micael wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 11:00 amYeah I’ll do that, thanks.jemhouston wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 10:56 am If he's had a stroke, listen to the doctors to see what they say. Anyway, everything seems to be stable so far. No worsening, just the left leg and to a small degree the left arm that seems to be affected. Oddly he seemed to be above his normal performance level on the cognitive tests that they administered, memory wise and such. Didn’t expect that.
Re: More parental concerns
So a bit of an update. No further setbacks as of yet, he’s improving in the use of his legs and such. Getting physiotherapy and trying to learn to walk with a rollator. He’s not there yet but it looks promising. Once he is able to do that the plan is for him to come home and continue as an outpatient with assistance measures at home.
I believe he was greatly benefited by a prompt medical intervention. Ambulance showed up, figured out that it was a likely stroke, contacted stroke ward for permission to administer the potent anticoagulants en route to the hospital, which was given. Then an immediate radiology scan, and into the stroke ward for further care. They conducted repeated stroke tests to look for any worsening, initially every fifteen minutes and then spaced out to once an hour. So far I am content with the level of care given.

My mother's also had a little bit of an adventure this week as well.
Turns out after a brain scan that what was thought to be a very mild TIA was actually an extremely severe migraine!

Sorry to hear that, it sounds like it was a better outcome than initially feared at least.David Newton wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 10:21 pm My mother's also had a little bit of an adventure this week as well.
