Minuteman Performance

Just seen this which is going to be of interest. 1958 configuration, note the terminal velocity of Mach 0.7!

...Are those projected figures? Minuteman didn't fly for almost three years after it's dated.

Early ICBM warheads went subsonic during the endgame because they were blunt-body heat-sinks.

I’m sure I read that Polaris/ Chevaline was subsonic in its terminal dive too.

How fast do modern MIRVs come in?

...And on Minuteman I, they would have landed horrifyingly short of their targets due to flaws in the first runs of production first stage engines - to the point where people standing ON the target may well have been able to look up and say, "What was that?"

...The best number I've been able to find is about 15.5K MPH.

Bit of an odd question....

Once stage one burns out and separates, what happens to the 2.5 ton shell as it falls from 15.5 miles up? Does it break up? Does it fall in one chunk?

Not that there would likely be anyone to complain to, but what would happen to the people under the flight path when it comes down?

...At least in theory, it'll separate over mostly uninhabited territory. And in any event, anybody actually down there will have bigger problems.
