A Story About The USAF And The RAF...

During DESERT STORM, both US and RAF planes were flying many sorties/day both independently controlled. Both air forces were co-operating closely. The US air traffic controllers were somewhat intrigued when listening in to radio chatter when RAF pilots would often report their current position as being above MMOFS. The Americans could find no such location on any map, briefing note or paperwork anywhere.

After all resources had been exhausted there was still no indication as to where MMOFS was. Too proud to expose ignorance and simply ask, the US sent a senior officer to visit an RAF station for a dinner with instructions to ply the RAF guys with as much alcohol as it took to find out this vital information.

Apparently many bottles of gin later, the US officer managed to drop his vital question into the after-dinner conversation. The answer?

“Well, old chap, MMOFS is shorthand, an acronym if you like, it stands for Miles and Miles Of Fu@king Sand…."

There’s also MMOFM, with the last M standing for Miles, and usually uttered by the infantry when looking at their next tab.
