So the regiment I did my first stint in the military in, A9 Bergslagens Artilleriregemente, was officially reactivated in a ceremony today.
In its first form it existed from 1943 (though officially inaugurated in 1945 and my dad was at the ceremony then at age 3), to 2005 when it was decided to shut down the artillery regiment in the town of Kristinehamn. Nominally the regiment was moved to the far north town of Boden then (just called A9 Artilleriregementet) at this point, but it was effectively made up of people from the former A8 regiment that used to exist there. So it wasn’t really the same regiment. With the 2020 defense decision to stand up a number of regiments that regiment in Boden resumed the use of the A8 designation and the name Bodens Artilleriregement in order to free up the designation for the regiment to be reactivated.
And so today the official reactivation occurred in Kristinehamn, officiated by the Duke of Värmland (in which Kristinehamn is located) Prince Carl Phillip. There’s a lot of work still to be done before it is fully operational as a training unit, up until now a proto-unit have been operated by P4 Skaraborgs Regemente and have begun training. This will transition to temporary facilities at the Villingsberg firing range while the infrastructure needed is built up in Kristinehamn. But in a couple of years or so things should start to be up and running, fun to see for me.
