Looking for a museum reccomendation in San Diego

Post by James1978 »

I'll be in SoCal for a few days for a wedding in early June. Staying with friends in San Diego who live a few blocks from a commuter rail station.

It looks like I may have most of a Friday to myself. I'm looking at the Maritime Museum and the Midway Museum.
Are both doable in a day (5-6 hours)?
If I can only get to one, which one should I go to?

I'm also open to recommendations for any good lunch spots within walking distance. I prefer local/regional to national chains.

Thanks in advance

Lunch: The Brigantine is a local chain, very good, and it's just a block and a half north of the Midway, half a block south of the Maritime Museum.

Believe you could do both in a day if you're determined and know what you want to see/do. If only one, do the Midway.

There’s lots of good restaurants and brewpubs nearby. Stone has one; so does Ballast Point. If you’re a devotee of Neptunus Lex, Shakespeare’s is a must. It’s easily accessible by trolley. Otherwise, what do you consider walkable? Basically, get three or four blocks inland and you’re in good shape for avoiding chains. Lots of good local stuff on 5th or in Little Italy.

The good news is that the Maritime Museum and Midway are right next to each other. The "bad" news is that both have apparently expanded their exhibits quite a bit since I was last there (in 2004), so nowadays 5-6 hours is probably just about right to see one or the other. If your interest is primarily in naval aviation, Midway is the obvious choice; if your interest is in all things nautical, the Maritime Museum covers a lot more ground.

Close to Shakespeare's is El Indio, which is probably the best Mexican food in the city of San Diego. Both are up on India Street.

If you want to drink, hit up one of The Consortium’s theme bars. Pure Project Is a good brewery.

If you want to go vegan/veg, hit up Kindred or Donna Jean.
