Re: Hurricane Season 2025

The best way to look at how active hurricane seasons are is to use ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy). The more powerful a storm is, the bigger its contribution to a season's ACE score. Likewise the longer lived a storm, the bigger its contribution to a season's ACE score. 2025 had an ACE of 132.5. Th...

Re: Hurricane Season 2025

Good news, for the first time since 2015, no hurricane made landfall in CONUS. Don't get cocky about hurricane season 2026. Yeah, but there was Hurricane Melissa. Most powerful landfalling hurricane in recorded Atlantic basin history. So whilst CONUS escaped other places got clobbered very badly.

Re: Unfortunate apartment name

This has got hugely, hugely worse than first thought.

There are SIX towers on fire AT THE SAME TIME!!! If there were people in those buildings (and there's every indication that there were) then this is going to be Grenfell multiple times over.

Unfortunate apartment name

We've got a somewhat tragic example of a name of place with a disaster that is extraordinarily unfortunate in English. There's been a high rise tower fire in Hong Kong that has killed 13 people in the district of Tai Po. The unfortunate part is the name of the apartment complex that the fire took pl...

Re: So I'm doing a thing....

The mass therefore ended at least 20 minutes before the concert. That's plenty of time to get into position on time, even in a cathedral. Usual practice for the choir I sang in until a year ago was to get to the church by 7pm for a concert starting at 7:30pm. We'd head up to the song school in the c...

Re: So I'm doing a thing....

Were a concert that I was attending that late starting then I would have words with the conductor afterwards. Words like "arrogant", "entitled" and "unprofessional". Were a concert that I was performing in that late starting then words like "who in the hell do you ...

Why an Australian landed an American registered plane with a big Russian Red Star in the middle of Ukraine

Rather amusing story that I saw on Facebook: So I don't think I posted it here, but maybe it deserves to be here. Few weeks ago I was contracted to extract a SU-31 from Ukraine. Kind of kept it quiet due to current situation. Owner is Ukranian mil pilot so not able to fly the aircraft out himself as...

Besides, there's absolutely zero point them being classified at all today. The secret bits are how you get a nuke to have a particular yield and exactly how many nukes of what yield are in the arsenal. An initiation of a particular yield at a given height above ground will produce known over-pressur...

They tends to be used for situations where the sex is unknown.

A distinctly less polite formulation sometimes used to insult activists is to refer to them as it.

So where was the race exactly?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gq2gdlnygo There has been a huge screwup by the organisers of the Great North Run in the UK. That's a large, mass participation half marathon that takes place each year around Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The 2025 version was last weekend. Unfortunately the medals given...

Re: The Monster beneath Campi Flegrei

Oh there are a LOT more active volcanoes in Italy than people realise. Of the Campanian Arc people have mostly only heard of Vesuvius, with some having heard of Campi Flegri and very few knowing about Ischia. Etna is Etna! Of the Lipari Islands people have likely heard of Stromboli, some have heard ...

Re: The Monster beneath Campi Flegrei

But the vast caldera which *had* to underlay area could not be confirmed beyond a short arc. Wrong. The geometry of the caldera has been well known for decades. Onshore it's patently obvious and offshore the location of the ring fault has been fairly well known. This work appears to have made thing...

What it doesn't deal with is both sides possessing nuclear weapons. That fundamentally alters the strategic and indeed even the grand strategic calculus yet again.

Re: Ozzy Osbourne has died

Grew up in the 80s, never liked his music, I was a Weird Al fan (no I've never been married, why do you ask?) But my Brother was a fan, I got exposed to his music a lot. Shame to see him go, but we all gotta go sometime. RIP. Thing is that Weird Al could likely do a creditable job of spoofing Black...

Depends on what you want to do with things? There are certain things that free alternatives do very, very well and certain things they don't. So what're the uses you need to put the software to?
