In fairness, they are people in Moscow this board would like down and out.Lordroel wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 4:36 pmYou start to think there are some people in Moscow who want this board down.
Re: Some trolls here
Actually, I'd call the numbers pretty low. Considering that most of them are bots running predetermined scripts to drop scams and advertising, the earlier filters are doing a good job of screening out the absolute morass of hopeless attempts. It only takes under a second to get to the point of applying for an account, after all.Lordroel wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 4:36 pmYou start to think there are some people in Moscow who want this board down.
The other thing is why so many are trying from Russia. It's not like disguising the location of the servers or redirecting the request is that hard, so why not use Cameron or Tonga or Chile for the origin point. Or is it like the misspelling and grammar errors in the scam emails, so that the people who proceed despite them are more likely to actually complete the scam or allow the security breach?

How much of Stuart's work involving Russia is still posted? If there's any of it, it wouldn't surprise me if the bots see russian names, places and so forth and bump it up the logic chain as a good prospect.

Everything that wasn't published has been posted. To be fair, that is most of the stories that take place in Russia. The only ones I can think of that are posted here are Conflict of Interest, Spiral of Destruction, and the unfinished Tilting The Balance.Belushi TD wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 1:55 pm How much of Stuart's work involving Russia is still posted? Re: Some trolls here
So that might be a reason we are inundated with the Russian bots. Maybe if we threw a password on that section it might cut down on the infestation?

Re: Some trolls here
Is there a way of auto-deleting everyone coming from a .ru IP address? Let them go through the application form, then automatically send it to the bin, so that their scripts don't notice anything off.

Re: Some trolls here
Not with this setup. However, most of those are gmail.com bots.
Re: Some trolls here
Does anyone understand the economic motives behind the lurking bot members? I understand the use case for spam bots but IIRC currently we have comparatively few of those. What is the point of having hundreds or even thousands of bot members if they just lurk and don't post or if they do post it is rare and not to sell things?

Re: Some trolls here
It is strange, my forum has hardly any bots trying to enter, so i think it is here due to large Russian mention on the forum why the Russian spam bots seem to be attracted to.

Does anyone recognise these guys at all?

Re: Some trolls here
Wasn't that Byron guy a member years ago? Pretty sure I remember "discussing" ATC user fees with him at one point...
Re: Some trolls here
Madhon is a member on my forum, so he is good, i think.
Re: Some trolls here
I think "bean" is worth a shot. I'm reasonably sure it's the poster we used to know as "ByronC" on the previous board, and that he currently runs https://www.navalgazing.net/.
In any event, I think non-.ru profiles deserve a few days to lurk before making a first post?
Is there a requirement for an introduction post from new members?
