Larry MacMurtry wrote four books in the Lonesome Dove Saga. He also worked on the teleplays for five miniseries.
I am watching Comanche Moon now. In chronological order it precedes Lonesome Dove and it really does fill in a lot of answers about the Lonsesome Dove characters; it is the back story and, IMO, really enhances my enjoyment of the Saga.
Chronologically the books run:
Dead Man's Walk – set in the early 1840s
Comanche Moon – set in the 1850–60s
Lonesome Dove – set in mid-to-late 1870s
Streets of Laredo – set in the early 1890s
In Comanche Moon it seems they cast young actors with a lot of the attributes and even a close resemblance to the old men of Lonesome Dove.
I was particularly impressed by the performance of Steve Zahn as Gus Mcrae. IMO he had everything about Robert Duvall's role down to a T including his voice and mannerisms. I can't say much about Karl Urban as Woodrow Call, that character is written so tight lipped that he really has very little to say.
Keith Robinson's Joshua Deets is another piece of fine casting. He really does come across as a young Danny Glover.
There is also a miniseries written by John Wilder called Return to Lonesome Dove. I would expect he was well compensated for the right to use his characters.
I have not seen Return to Lonesome Dove but it was not well received even with the Great John Voight playing the lead. If any of you have seen it I'd appreciate reading what you thought of it.

Not really a favorite character, but a really good line.
Fantastic AKA 'that idiot in the sunglasses' managing the solar powerplant in Fallout New Vegas.
"They asked me if I knew anything about power plants. I said as much as anyone I'd ever met. They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I said I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard."

From Pacific Rim
"Today... today. At the edge of our hope, at the end of our time — we have chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other. Today, there's not a man nor woman in here that shall stand alone. Not today. Today, we face the monsters that are at our door — and bring the fight to them! Today, we are cancellin' the apocalypse!"
