OK, I just finished the series, and honestly I was disappointed in the finale. I knew that having devoted 5 of 8 episodes to pure setup and 1 episode to a flashback, they would be hard pressed to actually wrap everything up well, but I didn't expect the entire series to be a setup for a 2nd hopeful ...

I did see a serious attempt at explaining it by conjecturing that the corporations run their own schools to train the only people moronic/desperate enough to sign up for these mad missions, and this is the result that you get. Yeah, I know the franchise is big on the incompetence of humans leading to their downfall but yikes, some of these crew react to other members being killed by something that is still actively loose and going to kill the rest of them with mild annoyance.
