Wow, I remember hearing about this at the time. It was widely reported in UK news iirc.

I recall hearing the the Brits had to attach military nomenclature experts to US HQs in Normandy to 'translate' British to US military-ese.

I have a 1930s book, Lyalls Languages of Europe, which provides useful phrases in multiple European languages for the British traveller.
