No word yet on when the repairs are due to be finished, but they are said to be progressing well. I've been to this ship a couple of times, and it holds a special place in my hearts as the site of one of the worst dates I've ever been on. My then girlfriend was stuck in Houston for an extra day after having a late night flight canceled. I took her out to San Jacinto to see the ship. It was a cold and windy morning, she was in surly mood after getting almost no sleep, and she never shared my appreciation for things that sail around and go boom, so it became a most unpleasant trip. For years afterward, she would recall what a terrible time she had there, and promise that if she were president one day she'd have all battleships turned to scrap, while I would taunt her about having our wedding on it.

She died last August. It's odd how that miserable day became such a fond memory to look back on.

There was talk a couple years ago about sending Texas to the scrapyard when it developed leaks necessitating repairs that our wonderful politicians didn't want to pay for. Thankfully, the money was coughed up in the end.
