Just out of curiosity, from a malicious user point of view, what is the point of a bunch of users' on a bulletin board with no posts? Or is it as simple as they were waiting to be activated?

No, they were all activated.

As I understand it, from a malicious point of view they <could> spam the system with zillions of posts a La DDOS stylee. However they’d need their first 5 to be approved by mods first.

Which is interesting how some of these new threads are getting started by new users, I think there’s a loophole that may need fixing…
