Not really if you accept the premise that gun control is keeping the people in power in power. Latin American countries, France (?), Italy (?) are afraid of veterans who took their weapons home after their service revolting, so they ban ownership military caliber weapons

US post Civil War didn't want the freed slaves defending themselves, so they tried outlawing the cheap guns (Saturday Night Specials), which they could afford.
