An area of Atlantic off Portugal historically spawned a Great Quake and several barely lesser.
The culprit has not been obvious...
Looks like has now been identified, where collision between African and Eurasian plate is causing edge of latter to buckle, subside. This could be the start of a new Atlantic subduction zone.
