UPS adopted the specific shade known as Pullman Brown in the 1910s, a color associated with the Pullman Company’s luxury railcars and chosen under manager Charlie Soderstrom’s push for a unified look that also hid road grime better than lighter paints.
The company later secured legal protection for this exact hue, successfully trademarking Pullman Brown in 1998 as part of its brand identity across vehicles and uniforms.
By 1929, brown had been standardized companywide, reinforcing instant recognition in markets the firm had served since its 1907 founding.
