Quite the sight to behold. I wonder if this is the largest church that’s been moved like this?

Church on a road trip
I believe I’ve mentioned it earlier at some point but the town of Kiruna in Sweden is in the process of relocating a bit away from its original site due to that location coming into conflict with continued mine expansion. Some of the more important structures are being moved physically (other torn down and replaced by new ones st the new location) and today the most visually striking one of those got to go on the road. The 600 ton town church.

Quite the sight to behold. I wonder if this is the largest church that’s been moved like this?

Re: Church on a road trip
Back when I was about 4 or 5, they moved a house in my grandmother's town. I convinced my grandmother to take me to watch the whole freakin thing. It was, to young me, one of the most impressive feats of engineering I could conceive of. I'm absolutely certain that she wanted nothing to do with it, but she was willing to indulge me.
It makes me nostalgic to see that church on the move, and I'm very glad they decided to move it rather than wreck and rebuild.

After two stints over as many days the church has completed the five kilometer trip.

It will still need to be installed on its new foundations and the bell tower will follow in a bit over a week but it seems to have gone well. I wonder how easy it is to find a contractor that will undertake something like this, has to be a pretty narrow field of business.

Kudos to the builders. I hope they watched over it from Heavan

First time I saw this thread I thought I was gonna see pictures of a church someone saw on a road trip, not a church TAKING a road trip!

Wow!!! That church is a beauty!
Westray: That this is some sort of coincidence. Because they don't really believe in coincidences. They've heard of them. They've just never seen one.

It looks like the church has a face and is smiling.Micael wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 3:38 pm After two stints over as many days the church has completed the five kilometer trip.

I guess we can reasonably conclude it’s happy.
