The New Weird

This book is a collection of short stories (OK so far) ... and then a tedious web based discussion of whether New Weird is a genre, and then various other bits of pontificating with a lot of name dropping, and then one of those (generally) awful round robin novellas.

So about 60% of the stories were OK, (3 were utter tripe) but the entire rest of the book made me want to stuff it down each participants throat.

You've got a bit of a problem when this 'new' genre includes work by Clive Barker, Michael Moorcock, and China Mieville. I've read a lot of all of them already.

I looked at this on Amazon, and I guess that it was published in 2008 makes it (slightly) less lame to feature older authors like that. It does feel that there is a lack of younger Sci-fi writers comparable to the old guard. (Granted I don't ready the smallest fraction of what some members of this board do, and indeed some very good fiction has been produced by the members here.) Perhaps the next great sci-fi will be written by a AI instead.
