The B-52 was a classic bomber even at the time of the 9/11 attacks. After the attacks, it continued to serve, with versions seeing action in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Tunisia Crisis, the Guyana War, Operation AVENGING FIRE, the Third Barbary War, the Belarus/Baltics Crisis, The Euro-American War, The Burma War, the Sino-American War, and the Second Mexican-American War.
Many B-52G once slated for scrapping under START were instead reactivated for conventional missions, and assigned to the Air National Guard in four squadrons. Others were converted into EB-52G defense suppression planes, mated with the Lond-Endurance Defense Suppression Missile, a modified AGM-129 with a conventional warhead and the ALQ-99 jammers of the EA-6B Prowler.
These are the major variants of the B-52 that saw service:
B-52G: 64 serving in the Air National Guard with four squadrons. Upgraded to carry JDAM, CALCM, CACM, JASSM, JASSM-ER, NSM, JSM. Tail guns retained.
EB-52G: 48 serving with the 66th Electronic Combat Wing.
B-52H: 90 serving in USAF in five squadrons. Upgraded to carry JDAM, CALCM, CACM, JASSM, JASSM-ER, NSM, JSM. Tail guns reactivated.
