I actually feel kinda sorry for the shipyard workers and staff. Things are not going to go well for them. Kim Jong Un is not known for being forgiving and is known for some brutal methods of execution.

Yes, this is not going to be pretty. At the same time I amazed that it tore the ship apart.

When I was a kid, we used to watch side launches at American Shipbuilding in Lorain, where my dad worked - several of the USCG's 210' cutters and a NOAA research ship. IIRC, much bigger than that, and you'd better be launching them backwards into the river.

Not enough space for such a launching there(see https://x.com/CSIS/status/1925612366667878892). They chose the wrong shipyard to build that ship.

Stern first launches need a lot of space, and put a big sagging strain on the keel (so they say). There's a non zero chance that the ship falls over at some point. Having said that it's been the usual method for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Looks like the biggest warship they previously build are 1.6k ton frigates and corvettes. Is it such a big jump from there to 5k or was that just bad luck?

No idea what that yard is doing with regard to merchants.

My heart goes out to the poor schmucks in the shipyard, but all considered, it looks like the Norks bit off more than they can chew. The DDG hast about three times the tonnage of their usual warship size, and they simply lack the experience.

What the ever loving F&#K did they do to make the ship rotate in two dimensions during the launch? Forget to remove the stops in the middle or something?

I've seen videos of a bunch of sideways launches because I like to see the idiots watching from the opposite shore get chased away by the wave that always happens (and they always are surprised by it!). So how did they manage to simultaneously get the ship to rotate around what appears to be its center of gravity AND fall over?

Looks like it hung up around the forward gun mount. That let the stern swing around into the water, while the bow rotated both upward and shoreward. While it was in it's cradle, there were sufficient supports for lateral stability. Since it rotated around, that support was lost for the back half and the front bit lifted off it's blocking. That left the middle superstructure will all of it's momentum, a lack of the support on the starboard side, and little righting moment from the back third in the water, causing the roll. Note how much roll there is on even a normal side launch. First rotate, then roll.

They say that all they need to do is right it and patch the holes. I think there's significant saltwater intrusion that will make it a bit more difficult, and an article in the NY Times says that the frame may be twisted because it's built too light.

Would a ship with regular frames not be twisted after something like this?

I vaguely remember seeing a video from a phone of this launch. If anyone else has seen it can they post a link?
